Space Empires: Starfury is an action RPG game created by Aaron Hall of Malfador Machinations. It was Malfador's second foray into RPGs, the first being Dungeon Odyssey. Sf was originally published by Shrapnel Games as an internet-ordered title. With the announcement of Malfador changing to a new retail publisher for the upcoming Space Empries V, Strategy First, Starfury was republished in the retail market on June 15, 2005.
SF pits you as the captain of a starship. You can explore the galaxy around you on your own, performing various types of missions assigned by various bases and colonies, or you can perform the missions of the main story line. Some of the missions you can perform include hunting pirates, running loads of cargo to other planets, charting planets, or even being a pirate yourself and preying on unsuspecting freighters.
SF is a highly moddable game, allowing the player to customize the items on their ships, the campaigns and missions they complete, how aliens behave, and so on.
Unfortunately, SF didn't seem to have the appeal of Malfador's other titles. Online forum activity was never very strong and all of the mod projects started for the game, save for The People's Mod, have died off. As Starfury reaches more customers in the retail market, things may change.
